UNCTAD-SMEP Side Event
Understanding Environmental Consequences of Production and Exports
(Moderated by Associate Professor Dr Atiq Zaman)
Hosted and supported by UNCTAD-SMEP as part of the GSN 2022 Conference at Curtin University, Perth, Australia, this side event focused on enhancing the understanding of the environmental footprint of global production and export systems, with a particular emphasis on sustainable practices in the Global South. Dr. Atiq Zaman moderated the session, which included a keynote presentation by Dr. Henrique Pacini (UNCTAD) on the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme. Dr. Pacini also launched the Plastic Dashboard, a tool designed to track and assess plastic use and alternatives globally. The event concluded with a round table discussion on international collaboration and potential partnerships to drive material circularity, including on non-plastic substitute materials sourced from developing countries that can help reduce pollution, increase resource efficiency and scale new value chains.
