Dr Shahed Khan

    1. Distinguished Academic and Leadership Career
      With over four decades in urban planning education and practice, Dr Shahed Khan served as Associate Professor at Curtin University (since 2007), including leadership roles as Head of Department Planning and Geography and Director of International and Alumni Engagement within the School of Built Environment.

    2. Global Academic Training and Professional Expertise
      Dr Khan held a PhD in Urban Planning (AIT, Bangkok), an MURP from the University of Hawai‘i, and a BArch from NED University (Pakistan), reflecting a cross-disciplinary and globally informed academic background that shaped his work across continents.

    3. Research Leadership on Urban Governance and Sustainability
      His research advanced knowledge in urban governance, sustainable development, community engagement, housing policy, and the SDGs, with numerous funded studies across Australia and South Asia, including for EMRC, City of Vincent, and the Pilbara Planning Commission.

    4. Supervision of Globally Relevant PhD Research
      Dr Khan supervised PhD research across diverse urban challenges—from climate change adaptation and transport equity in Australia to social housing and informal settlements in Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan—demonstrating his global mentoring reach.

    5. Strategic International Engagement and Collaboration
      He led Curtin’s Japan Study Tour (2008–2019) and initiated MOUs with Toyo and Tokyo City Universities. He also served as an expert advisor to governments in Pakistan and Bangladesh. He worked closely with UN-Habitat, UN ESCAP, and the East-West Centre on planning governance and disaster management.

    6. Scholarly Contributions and Editorial Roles
      Dr Khan authored or co-authored over 50 publications, including chapters in Springer and Routledge and articles in journals like Cities, Habitat International, and Urban Policy and Research. He also served on editorial boards for journals on Asian studies and the built environment.

    7. Industry-Relevant and Impactful Projects
      As chief investigator, he delivered applied planning research on community transport, public engagement in infrastructure, and urban value mapping for multiple WA local governments—bridging academic knowledge with on-ground urban challenges. Served as Team Leader, Urban and Regional Planning on ‘Greater Miri Development Master Plan – 2030’ Project, Malaysia.

    8. Recognition as a Thought Leader in Planning Education
      Dr Khan’s Curtin Excellence Award for Global Citizenship and Internationalisation, his roles as Track Chair at World Planning Schools Congresses, and invitations to speak at global policy forums reflected his stature as a thought leader on sustainable and inclusive urban futures.
